Visiting some of the places documented on Lewis and Clark’s incredible 1804 journey up the Missouri River and westward toward the Pacific

Fort Jefferson Hill Park and Memorial Cross, Kentucky

My first intersection with the movements of Lewis and Clark is here in Kentucky. Lewis and Clark visited this area at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers on the way to their St. Louis embarkation point.

While here they practiced their celestial navigation (since the confluence was a known point). They got pretty good at it. Twenty of the 23 longitudes they calculated on the trip would prove to be accurate to within 1/2 degree.

I’m guessing the cross came later?
